For those concerned about accidental exposure to radioactive materials or potential terrorist acts, the GammaPix App offers a timely alert for radiation presence using just the smartphone’s camera. While it should not replace dedicated ionizing radiation detectors, it serves as a rapid and convenient tool for preliminary threat assessment.

It is important to note that this application functions as a tool and various factors may affect the accuracy of its measurements:

It is recommended to perform this initialization in an area suspected to be free from excessive radioactivity, ensuring that the device is cool and unplugged.

For enhanced performance, ensure that no light interferes with the camera while operating the GammaPix app. Placing the device in a pocket or covering it with an object such as a book works effectively. Electrical tape can also help block light exposure.

The reading process typically spans approximately 3 to 5 minutes when radiation levels are stable; however, imminent danger will be reported more swiftly. It should be noted that certain phone models may not support the app effectively due to limitations in camera optimization at low light levels, leading to disproportionately bright images. Moreover, some individual iOS 8 devices may face compatibility issues.
